Good cartoons outlive the morning coffee.

An editorial cartoon shows a smiling corporate presenter gesturing toward two open gates labeled “Paramount” and “Warner Bros. Discovery.” Both entrances lead to one unfinished building with a single executive chair inside. A sign reads “PENDING APPROVAL,” while a visitor studies the arrangement. The speech bubble says, “More choice! You can enter our one company through either door.”

Competition, Under One Roof

Paramount and 12 US states announced a settlement on September 21 over its Warner Bros. Discovery takeover. It included production and oversight commitments; AP reported that a judge still had to approve the settlement.

Editorial cartoon on cream paper: two negotiators sit across a conference table beneath US and Chinese flags. A red telephone labeled “AI INCIDENT HOTLINE PROPOSAL” sits between them, with its cord leading to a small headset-wearing robot under the table. The US negotiator points toward it while saying the AI emergency line perhaps should not be answered by AI. The Chinese negotiator looks skeptical. Credit appears along the bottom.

First, Agree Who Answers

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sunday that Washington proposed an AI-security incident alert system to China. The proposal would improve communication about risks between the rival technology powers.

Editorial cartoon on cream paper: Donald Trump points proudly to a glass case containing a document labeled “ENERGY STRIKE AGREEMENT,” while a suited aide gestures toward a smoking oil refinery. The aide says, “Excellent. The agreement is the only thing that hasn’t caught fire.” A Russian flag is visible on a refinery tank. Credit appears along the bottom.

The Agreement Is Fireproof

Russian officials reported damage to Moscow’s oil refinery in a Ukrainian drone attack on September 20. Reuters later reported three deaths in the region, despite Trump’s earlier claim of an agreement to stop energy strikes.

A single-panel editorial cartoon set at a desk before an Arctic Greenland landscape. Donald Trump holds a huge ornate frame labeled GREENLAND, while a Greenlandic representative holds out a SECURITY ACCESS badge and a large key. A Danish representative sits beside papers labeled SECURITY ACCESS — PROPOSED AGREEMENT. The speech balloon reads, “Security access. The deed stays here.” The cream, blue, rust, and black-hatched artwork presents the distinction between military access and sovereignty.

Security, Not Ownership

Trump announced a deal to expand the US military presence in Greenland. Denmark says it preserves sovereignty and awaits signing and parliamentary procedures. (ca.marketscreener.com)

Editorial cartoon in a cream-paper, crosshatched style. Inside a Bank of Japan control room, an operator pulls a large upward lever beneath a sign reading “POLICY RATE: 1% → 1.25% ANNOUNCED.” A worried yen-symbol balloon sinks outside the window over a Japanese cityscape, while an assistant reads a manual. A speech bubble asks, “We raised the rate. Did anyone tell the yen?”

Rates Up, Yen Down

The Bank of Japan approved a rate rise from 1% to 1.25%, a 31-year high, to counter inflation risks. The yen nevertheless weakened as traders questioned the pace of further increases. (aol.com)

Vintage editorial cartoon showing caricatured BRICS leaders sharing a globe-shaped cake beneath a BRICS sign reading MORE SEATS AT THE TABLE, while an Uncle Sam figure sits at a smaller G7 table looking unimpressed.

More seats at the table

BRICS leaders adopted a joint statement at their September 12 summit in New Delhi, expressing concern over Middle East tensions and opposing sanctions not authorised by the UN. The expanded group sought a larger role in global affairs.

A worried anthropomorphic oil barrel stands in a control room between three routes. HORMUZ is barricaded, the EAST-WEST PIPELINE door is damaged and smoking, and a window marked BAB EL-MANDEB shows a tanker passing a HOUTHI checkpoint. The barrel asks, “PLAN C?”

Plan C?

Saudi oil's alternative routes keep becoming the story: Hormuz is heavily disrupted, the East-West pipeline has been shut after drone attacks, and Houthis have advanced to Mayun in Bab el-Mandeb.

Vintage-style editorial cartoon of a Russian-marked submarine near Svalbard. A bear leans from the submarine holding giant bolt cutters over undersea cables while a NATO ship shines a searchlight onto the scene.

Just a connectivity test

Reuters reported on September 10 that NATO allies disrupted a Russian undersea exercise near Svalbard in the spring, citing two Western officials. The report says no cables were damaged.

A worried personified globe fills a small car at a petrol pump. The hose narrows into a funnel labelled STRAIT OF HORMUZ containing tiny oil tankers, while the pump display reads BRENT $100+ / BARREL.

The narrowest part of the budget

Brent crude rose above $100 a barrel on September 9 as the US–Iran war escalated. AP reported renewed tanker attacks and disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for world oil supplies.

An anxious fictional diplomat balances on a tall stack of Mercator atlases beside a cartographer presenting a stylized Equal Earth world map with Africa prominently shown.

A matter of scale

The UN General Assembly voted on September 4 to encourage use of the Equal Earth map. The resolution aims to show continents’ relative sizes more accurately, addressing distortions in widely used Mercator maps.
